Neighbours Helping Neighbours

A simple way to support each other as we age in place

Our community of 37 homes is full of capable, caring people. As we all get older, we may need a little help from time to time — and we can offer help too. The Neighbours Helping Neighbours program is a light, friendly system that makes it easy to connect, support one another, and stay safe.

Purpose

To build a supportive, connected neighbourhood where residents can comfortably ask for small help, offer their skills, and know that someone is looking out for them.

What the Program Includes

1. Light Help Network

Volunteers offer small, everyday assistance such as:

  • Changing light bulbs or smoke detector batteries
  • Bringing garbage bins to/from the curb
  • Quick tech help (phones, remotes, printers)
  • Watering plants or checking mail when someone is away
  • Occasional rides to appointments, airport or ferry terminal
  • Short visits or check‑ins
  • Pet support

Participation is always voluntary and low‑pressure.

2. Skills & Interests List

A simple directory of neighbours who are willing to help with specific tasks.
Examples: minor repairs, driving, baking, pet care, computer help, gardening.

Residents choose only what they’re comfortable offering.

3. Wellness Check‑In

A buddy system for anyone who wants it.

  • Paired neighbours check in by text or call every day or two
  • If someone doesn’t respond, the buddy follows up
  • Especially helpful for those living alone

4. Short‑Term Support

When someone is recovering from illness, surgery, or loss, neighbours can offer:

  • Meal support
  • Errands or grocery help
  • Rides to appointments
  • Friendly visits

5. Emergency Contacts

Each household can share emergency contacts, keys and any relevant notes (optional).
This helps during storms, outages, or urgent situations. (Also covered by Emergency Preparedness program)

6. Community Connections

Optional social activities to strengthen relationships:

  • Coffee mornings
  • Walk‑and‑talk groups
  • Seasonal gatherings

Stronger connections make helping easier and more natural.

How to Participate

  • Choose what you’re comfortable offering
  • Let us know if you’d like a check‑in buddy
